Introducing my aviary (Feathered Fiasco’s)
I’ve always had a story to tell regarding my little feathered friends, the trouble is where to start! I suppose introduction's first. There are several canaries, finches and quail all living (mostly harmoniously) together. Fallouts are mainly from intrudors, with the exceptions of small squabbles.
Each bird has it’s own personality, for example there is Savannah (canary) who loves to sing the most, Mulberry (quail) who has to climb to the highest point to make his call or Pastel (Finch) who is the nest invader who pinches bedding from everyones nest for his own.
There are also three little resident mice (wild) who have moved in - that can be a seperate blog.
I never do anything “by the book” so there are probably canary experts panicking as I have multiple canaries living together (sixteen at one time, currently eleven with chicks very likely) but the little guys all get on really well. Sometimes they squabble over who is their nest neighbour - for example, Cameo didn't like Bumble being in the box next door but was perfectly fine when Biscuit took over the same one, once Cameo had moved Bumble further along. Ironically Bumble is mother to both Cameo and Biscuit.
My male canaries, yes there are several, defy canary convention in regards to territorial disputes (they don't fight) or multiple female breeding (each male has one lady and he sticks with her and only her, same pairings every year) those canaries that have passed, their partners left behind take widowhood very seriously and haven't found new partners. Bumble is one of those, her partner Patch died last year and although she has nested up, and laid (infertile) eggs, she has refused to partner with the single males. Savannah, one of the single males, as his partner Coral died earlier this year, could easily be with Bumble, but he also chooses to remain solo. All my canaries also help feed and nurture the chicks that are born, regardless of who are the parents.
Hopefully this gives you a bit of an idea on the aviary life, I will add more blogs about them titled “Feathered Fiasco’s”
